Welcome to the web pages of Eynsham Morris

Eynsham Morris have a proud tradition stretching back to the nineteenth century and probably beyond. We have some of the most exciting and flamboyant dances in the morris tradition, and a dancing style to match. We try to live up to Cecil Sharp's description from 1908 (above).

From the menu bar on the left you can find out where we're dancing, read about our long history, look at pictures and videos, and learn a bit about the dances. You can also find out about our home town, Eynsham. Contact us to find out more, to invite us to dance for you, or to join us.

The May Ox is back!

NEWSFLASH: Return of the May Ox
For about 20 years an ox bearing a maid decked with garlands used to appear on May Morning at Aristotle Bridge in North Oxford. The effigy was created by the late Michael Black, the sculptor who restored the solemn, bearded Emperors' Heads outside the Sheldonian Theatre. Michael Black helped to create an alternative May Morning in North Oxford, inviting morris dancers to his home in Chalfont Road and furnishing them with a beery breakfast known as 'Black's Treat'. The nearby Anchor pub was a focus for their revels. Events declined in recent years due to the sculptor’s ill-health, and on St Valentine’s Day this year Michael Black died at the age of 90. One last appearance of the May Ox is scheduled for Aristotle Bridge on May Morning 2019. Celebrations are likely to last from 6 to 7.30am.

Eynsham morris workshops

Eynsham is famous for its long and unique tradition of English morris dancing.

All members must have lived in the village for some time in their life , making us one of only 3 sides in England to achieve this closeness and the cameraderie that goes with it.

If you would like to be part of that local tradition join us at our workshop evenings.

Keep it living!
